Fred Händl - a life in music

How It All Began

Fred Händl was born in Bliesdorf, Germany, in 1972, but the family soon moved to Eindhoven in the Netherlands. Growing up in a musical household, it wasn’t long before young Fred’s curiosity led him to the piano sitting in their living room and his fascination soon shifted from playing around with the keys to dedicated learning, eventually setting him on a path that would turn music into his career.

Studying Music

In the 1990s, Fred decided to take his passion for music to the next level by enrolling at the Conservatory of Tilburg to study 'Jazz and Popular Music' under Willem Kühne, among others. There, his musical repertoire expanded from childhood songs to complex jazz compositions. Later, his interest in the psychological effects of music on the mind led him to study music therapy at De Kopse Hof in Nijmegen.

Adventures Around the World and Settling in The Hague

After completing his studies, Fred decided it was time to pack his bags and explore the world—and that’s exactly what he did! He traveled through North and South America, as well as (Eastern) Europe. These global adventures served as a big inspiration for his music. By 2006, however, Fred decided it was time to settle down, and The Hague became his new home.

Teaching the Next Generation

Fred's love for teaching began in his childhood when he would show his friends how to play different songs on the piano. This enthusiasm for sharing his knowledge continued into adulthood. In 2008, he became a full-time piano teacher, and in 2015, Fred eventually opened his own studio - The Yellow Hippo Studios - where he welcomes students from all walks of life. In 2021, he became a member of EPTA Netherlands (the European Piano Teachers Association).

Fred Takes the Stage

Fred is not just a teacher; he is also a performer. His stage career, as a performer of Frank Zappa’s music, began in 2014 when Mark McInnes invited him to audition for the Zappa tribute band, Zappatika. Despite a rocky audition process, Fred's determination earned him a spot in the band. As a member of Zappatika, Fred shared the stage with Frank Zappa alumni such as Ike Willis, Jeff Hollie, Craig Twister Steward, Ed Mann and Denny Walley. He performed all across Europe and played at popular festivals like Festival Moo-Ah! and the renowned Zappanale Festival in Bad Doberan. Performing at Zappanale 2015 alongside five Zappa alumni was a dream come true for the lifelong Zappa fan and a highlight of his career.

In 2016, after two successful years, Fred made the difficult decision to leave Zappatika and went on and formed his band Dr. Freddie’s Atomic Commotion.He also joined Seattle’s based ensemble Z.E.R.O. for several performances of Zappa’s music across the U.S. and Europe, often alongside legendary artists like Ike Willis, Jeff Hollie and Prairie Prince.

From Stage to Studio...

Fred’s love for music extends beyond teaching and performing. In 1996, he released his first solo piano album, Moon and Stars and Moon And Stars And All That Jazz, and he has been producing music ever since. Like many musicians, the pandemic hit Fred hard, with all his gigs and tours canceled. Instead of letting it get him down, Fred channeled his energy into recording music. He released ZAPPA, an album of solo piano renditions of Zappa tunes, followed by Tovarishchi, an album he described as “a portrait of unhappy times. Times of war and devastation. It’s a mirror of time and life, with (and in) all its aspects. Hurtful. Lonely. Afraid. And sad.” He also released the Album F and several singles. ...And Back on Stage

In the past few years, Fred has returned to playing on stages all across Europe. In 2023, he had the opportunity to return to Zappanale, performing both as part of the “All New Frankly Don’t-Wop Duo” and as a solo artist. That same year, he performed at Mosae Zappa with the newly formed trio called HBH (Hollie, Beck, Händl). This was followed by a series of solo performances across Europe in 2024. Later that year, HBH became The Jeff Hollie Quartet and made two appearances at Zappanale, with Fred also performing during the goodbye session. With more shows planned, Fred's musical journey is far from over.

Today and Beyond

Whether teaching in his studio, performing on stage, or working on new music, Fred remains as passionate and enthusiastic as ever. There’s always something going on with Fred Händl, whose deep love for music and the friendships he’s built around the world continue to fuel his desire to share his performances with as many people and places as possible.
